Tingri to Everest Base Camp Trek - 15 Days:
An adrenaline fueled adventure journey to the base camp of Mt. Everest with a through exploration of Tibetan heartlands.
Nowhere in the Himalayas can the immense height of Mount Everest, the highest peak on earth, be appreciated as from Tibet. The northern part of this grand mountain is unobstructed by neighboring peaks or ridges, allowing excellent views of the entire massif from Rongbuk Base Camp. A good portion of the summit is even visible from several points along the Kathmandu - Lhasa highway, in particular from the Tingri plains.
There are different routes between Tingri and Rongbuk Everest Base Camp and even though our route is the most demanding, it is also the most scenic. We walk along a high ridge shoulder with good views of Mount Everest to finally arrive in the village of Zommug.
After the trek we make our way towards Lhasa and stop in the towns of Shigatse and Gyantse where we explore monasteries and fully immerse ourselves in the Buddhist culture. Before we fly back to Kathmandu we spend a couple of days in Lhasa, the heart and soul of Tibet and an object of devout pilgrimage, it is still a city of wonders. The medieval push and shove of crowds, the street performers, the stalls hawking everything from prayer flags to jewel-encrusted yak skulls, and the devout tapping their foreheads to the ground at every step is an exotic brew that few newcomers can resist.

Detail Itinerery
Day 1: Drive to Border, cross border and drive to Nyalam [3750m]
We leave Kathmandu early in the morning and drive for about 123km through the beautiful Nepalese countryside to Kodari at the Nepal-Tibet border. After completing the border formalities at both the Nepalese and Chinese immigration posts, we drive up a series of incredibly steep switchbacks that pass through a mossy gully with cascading waterfalls to finally arrive in Nyalam on the Tibetan side of the border.
Day 2: Rest day at Nyalam for acclimatization
Today we spend a rest day in Nyalam in order to acclimatise before heading up higher. A short way out of town there is a small temple, Nyalam Pelgye Ling, which is associated with the eleventh- and twelfth-century poet lama Milarepa.
Day 3: Drive to Tingri [4390m]
Today's drive takes us from the lush, green lower hills into the dry and arid landscape of the Tibetan Plateau. We cross several high passes including the Lalung La [5,050m], which, on a clear day, offers the most breathtaking panorama of the Himalayan range including Mt Everest. We spend the night in Tingri.
Day 4: Trek to Lung Thang [4510m]
The first day of our Himalaya trekking tour takes us across the Tingri plain as we make our way south towards Cho Oyu. In the village of Chholung there is a small Gompa we can visit. Not far from Chholung we arrive at our campsite in Lungthang - the last village in this part of the Tingri plains. It is a bleak region surrounded by barren flats, yet the people manage to harvest barley. Most villagers here are also herders.
Day 5: Trek to Lamna La [5150 m]
Today we really start trekking as we are heading up into the mountain towards the top of the Langma La [5,150m]. It is a hard day’s trekking with a lot of uphill walking, but it is even more rewarding as the views of the Himalayas gets better the higher we go. Tonight we camp near the top of Langma La.
Day 6: Trek to Zommug
We start the day with a steep decent from Langma la, towards our destination for the day Zommug. The Vegetation here is considerably more lush, than on the Dingri side of the pass, capable of supporting hundreds of yaks and a few herders' families. As we get closer we can see the whitewashed walls of Zommug village, the highest permanent settlement in the Everest region. Zommug is set high above the valley in a moonscape of barren hills with views of Mount Everest and Gyachung Kang. Because crops cannot survive at this elevation, all of the families residing here rely upon animal husbandry.
Day 7: Trek to Rongbuk
We start the day with a steep decent from the Langma La towards Zommug - our destination for the day. The vegetation here is considerably lusher than on the Tingri side of the pass. As we get closer we can see the whitewashed walls of Zommug, the highest permanent settlement in the Everest region. The village is set high above the valley in a moonscape of barren hills with magnificent views of Mount Everest and Gyachung Kang. Because crops cannot survive at this altitude the families who live here rely upon animal husbandry.
Day 8: Exploration at Rongbuk Glacier
On the last day of our Himalaya trekking tour we hike towards the Dza Rongbuk monastery and the Rongbuk Everest Base Camp. Dza Rongbuk Gompa and its accompanying hermitage retreats were introduced to the world in the 1920s through the accounts of the first British mountaineering teams.
Day 9: Drive to Lhatse [4050m]
Today we leave the Rongbuk valley and say goodbye to the impressive view it has offered us. We have a short drive towards Shegar over the Pang La [5,150m] away from the main Himalayan range. The view from the top is incredible as it offers uninterrupted views stretching from Makalu to Shishapangma. We drive to Shegar via the Friendship Highway where we’ll stay in the Hotel Quomolongma – the Tibetan name for Mount Everest.
Day 10: Drive to Shigatse [3900m]
Today we continue along the Friendship Highway, marvelling once more at the barren yet spectacular landscape of Tibet. Before the small town of Lhatse we cross the highest pass on our journey, the Gyamtso La [5220m], before descending once more to the barren splendour of the plains. Tonight, we stay in Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet at either the Shigatse Hotel or Shandong Mansion.
Day 11: Sightseeing & drive to Gyantse [3950m]
This morning we have time to visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of the largest functioning monasteries in Tibet, before setting off on the relatively short drive to Gyantse. Once in Gyantse we can explore the Pelkor Chode Monastery and the Gyantse Kumbum. The Kumbum is a large gold-domed stupa and its many chapels house an impressive array of Tibetan Buddhist murals. We’ll probably stay at the Hotel Gyantse or a similar type.
Day 12: Sightseeing & drive to Lhasa [3660m]
This spectacular drive takes us over the Karo La [5,045m] where we are treated to the awesome sight of a huge glacier tumbling down to within a few hundred meters of the road. Beyond the small, developing town of Nagartse the road follows the bank of a beautiful turquoise lake, the Yamdrok-tso. We then cross the Khamba La [4,794m.] and continue on to Lhasa, where we check into the Dhood Gu Hotel. Rongbuk-Everest Glacier
Day 13: Sightseeing in Lhasa
Today will be spent visiting several of Lhasa's many monasteries in the company of a guide and interpreter. One of these is the Sera Monastery, one of the best-preserved Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Several hundred monks live and study within its whitewashed walls and golden roofs. After lunch we'll visit the Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama, as well as the Jokhang Temple. This temple is possibly the most sacred shrine in Tibet and there is always a procession of devout Tibetans through the complex. Surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkhor - a maze of narrow cobbled streets, which is the central market of Lhasa.
Day 14: Sightseeing in Lhasa
This morning we will visit the Potala Palace towering above the city of Lhasa. This spectacular building contains the private quarters of the Dalai Lama as well as numerous grand state rooms and many important chapels. There has been a palace on this site since the 5th or 6th centuries, but the present palace was constructed in the 17th century. A visit to the Drepung Monastery in the afternoon will complete a truly awe-inspiring day. Founded in the 14th century, this monastery was once the largest in the world, housing around 10,000 monks. Nowadays the figure is down to several hundred, but there is still much here of interest as it was left relatively unscathed during the Cultural Revolution.
Day 15: Fly to Kathmandu
Sadly we leave Lhasa early in the morning for the two-hour drive to Gonggar Airport and our flight back to Kathmandu or your onward destination. The Air China takes us right across the main Himalayan range and the mountain views are spectacular.
